Along the same lines of air quality we have been working in the field of ventilation efficiency in housing. With the new work that we propose, we would launch another section about outdoor spaces (courtyards) treatment in order to achieve a sufficient air quality to serve as inlet air in housing. A combination of specifications in being searched to make housing projects with outdoor spaces (courtyards) in tune with the kind of building and the available surrounding environment. The impact of this project is going to be very positive for the architects who design homes, for those who verify the fulfillments of the national regulation (in Spain, the Building Code CTE), for the users and generally for everyone who take part in the building process. The first ones will find it easier to design courtyards in a more controlled an adjusted to the particular casuistry way. The second ones will be able to verify the goodness of the project. The third ones will find it positive that a non foul ventilation air will be guaranteed by the courtyard itself or the outdoor space.
The goal for this project is to do a complete study of alternative solutions to the outdoor spaces that the national regulation (in Spain, the Building Code CTE DB-HS3, Indoor Air Quality) reduces just to a single and generic model which is causing a huge preoccupation upon projecting housing buildings. In this way, it is expected to provide the designer with more accurate tools for the specific cases that could be brought up without a reduction of the ventilation efficiency. The final goal of this research would be a Recognized Document of the CTE derived from the results or, at worst, that it will be able to be used to justify the requirements of the code.
METHODOLOGY AND WORK SCHEDULE
Stage 1: state of the art of the matter in communications to congresses, articles, books and Spanish and international regulations. Study and classification of building typologies and climatic and meteorological zones in Spain.
Stage 2: Numerical and experimental study of the most representative typologies. Software of CFD adaptation for a thorough study of air behavior in outdoor spaces. Adaptation of the test chamber and other possible adjacent spaces for the real reproduction or at scale of the courtyards prototypes and, in this way, being able to carry out experimental tests for the validation of the CFD results. Adaptation and expansion of the instrumental equipment for the forementioned experimental tests.
Stage 3: Graphic and statistic treatment of the numerical data obtained and extraction of scientific conclusions.
Stage 4: Writing of a documentation with a professional application for the designer as a whole of solutions with the conveniently settled results to be applied for a diverse casuistry.
